Jennifer Coates

Upward Strangle

I did a studio visit with Jennifer Coates a few weeks ago. I was knocked out loaded as soon as I walked through the door, and I was only looking at the drawings. Yeah, man. Trouble ahead, but in the best of ways.

Appearance

Some of the paintings practically writhe their way off the canvas. It's like they're breaking out of their own skin. And the drawings. Oh, my. The drawings are doing the same thing but in the opposite direction, moving back into the paper. No matter the direction of the movement, all the works burrowed their way into me.

And here's some excellent news. A couple days after my studio visit Coates learned that she was going to have a show at Feigen Contemporary, one of my favorite galleries, opening on May 11. Write it down and file it under B, y'all . . . for Biomorphic ass-kicking.

Clearing

awesome!!!!!!!!! I'm very excited about the show. I love the idea of the drawings burrowing back into the paper and the images writhing around. Biomorphic ass-kicking indeed. Rock on!!

burrowing is an excellent term here, heart. yes. there is delicacy, beauty and light vs. obsessive burrowing turmoil playing off eachother in Jennifer's work. These are all beautiful images and YES, we are looking forward to their May playdate with the outside world. The third image (the drawing) makes me think of led zep and stonehenge. LOVE.

HAA, thank you for posting these amazing escape portals -- you have no idea how desperately they are needed! I cannot wait to see them in the reals... Hooray!

I am in love with the sparkle forest of hallucination. I am winding my way through the trees in order to become one of the sparkles.

For real. I got the jagged warm fuzzies as soon as I walked into her studio. Since I posted them I've clicked on them for the blow-up a couple times and I'm still seeing new things in them. They just keep moving. Organic, that.

Them. Them. Them. Them. I didn't use that word enough in my last post.

I think these paintings are very full, full to bursting, of personhood. They are trying to say the impossible thing of what it feels like to be alive and singular when noone has ever been anything else. The works fizz with a longing to be what they are already.

I too would like a studio visit because I imagine that the person who made these works is extremely sexy.

Are we allowed to lick these?

Yes PD. You may lick them, you may lick the screen. You may lick anything you wish, Jesus told me so.

Does anyone know where you can potentially purchase one of her paintings? Thats quite ambitious of me to ask, but i will settle for a poster, i need something of that immense beauty hanging on my wall!
