Jaw. Drop Theyself.

I wasn't familiar with Nicola Tyson before Saturday so her show at Friedrich Petzel took me by surprise. I had trouble leaving the buiding. I tried once, but didn't make it past the front desk before I turned about to take another walkthrough. I was able to finally tear myself away, but after seeing a few more galleries I had to go in one more time. My jaw could not have been more familiar with the floor. I'm betting that this will be one of the best painting shows I see all year. Not to be missed.

Is it possible to take photos of the galleries, openings, etc you visit or would you get kicked out for that? I turned to the art blogs hoping to see what I cant see hundreds of miles away.

I try to avoid openings unless I know the artist. Sometimes the lighting in galleries is bad news when it comes to photos. Some galleries are cool with the pic taking. Some are not. Sometimes it depends on the artist or the show. I think they'd only kick someone out if you refused to stop taking pictures if they asked them to do so. That, or if you put little plastic army men on the art. They hate that.

Yes. That WAS a nice surprise, Count Slothular. It really was the day for that. You guys. JD. And a couple people from the CT crew. The weather as an art goggling lubricant. And yeah. The N. Tyson. What. A. Show. My goodness.

regi, here's a way to see art: go to the gallery websites. usually there are images by their artists, including current shows.

I'm going again this weekend, io. Nothing but yearning when I think about it. Always a good sign when I actually miss a group of paintings.

Yes PD, they are more thickly painted than her old work, less indebted to Bacon, less graphic, more exploratory, willing to be ambiguous. I liked them. Will be going for another peek this weekend for further contemplation.

Sounds good. I remember not liking the last show that much because the paint seemed so dry and almost sunk into the canvas, so the images did not resonate as much.

Great photos. I was interested in the question too of your use of the photos. I've got photos of a couple of original art works that I own on my blog and wondered whether the artists would appreciate their appearance. But yours are of the works on display, so I'm curious about the legal implications of that, copyright, etc. We don't get a lot of art shows here.

Thanks for the compliment, but they're from the gallery website (http://www.petzel.com/).
